Our Name

In March 2013, the Miramar Baptist Church adopted the new name:

Gateway Baptist Church, Miramar

We are very excited about this change as it reflects what we sense God is calling us to be in this community... a gateway between heaven and earth for God to move in people’s lives and a gateway for people to find God and enter into His Kingdom.

A key Bible passage that led us to this name was the story of Jacob’s encounter with God in Genesis 28:10-22.  In response to his divine visitation, Jacob cried out (vs 17): “How awesome is this place!  This is none other than the house of God; the gate of heaven”.  Our hope & prayer is that people who come to Gateway Baptist will also encounter God and enter into a deeper relationship with Him.

There are several other Bible passages that refer to ‘gates’...

Matthew 7:13-14  ‘Enter through the narrow gate.  For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter through it.  But small is the gate, and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few will find it.’

John 10:9 Jesus said... “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.”

The Miramar Peninsula is also located at the ‘gateway to the Wellington harbour’ and also hosts the airport as the ‘gateway to the city’.  As believers in Jesus, we are called in Psalm 24:7-10 to ‘open the gates’ (of our lives) to ‘let the King of glory come in’ to our community & our city.
